THE STILLNESS BEFORE THE STRIKE
He placed his arms behind his back, interlocking them gently, not rigidly, because discipline was never about strain—it was about intention. His shoulders settled. His chest lifted. His gaze fixed on his own reflection, not with vanity, but with the sober recognition that he was about to be measured.
The house was still. Even the air seemed to pause. He did not speak. He did not shift. He did not prepare himself with stretches or rituals of comfort. The ritual itself was the preparation. He stood in the mirror, letting the posture take hold, letting the garment remind him of the simplicity of obedience. He had learned over the years that the hardest battles were not fought in motion—they were fought in stillness. Movement gave the mind places to hide. Stillness exposed everything.
He heard the Bishop before he saw him. Not footsteps—just presence. The Bishop entered the room quietly, as he always did, never announcing himself, never disturbing the silence the man had already built. He stood in the doorway for a moment, observing. The man did not turn. He did not acknowledge him. The ritual forbade it. The Bishop’s gaze moved slowly, taking in the garment, the posture, the breath, the steadiness of the man’s stance. He circled him once, deliberate and slow, the way a craftsman inspects the integrity of a structure before placing weight upon it. The man felt the inspection, felt the gravity of it, but he did not flinch. His eyes remained forward.
The Bishop stopped beside the small table near the wall. Upon it, he placed a single object—a folded towel. Nothing more. No strap. No rod. No oil. The absence was not an omission; it was a declaration. Today was not a day of correction. Today was a day of stillness. The man understood immediately. The Bishop did not need to speak. The towel was not a tool. It was a question.
The Bishop stepped back toward the doorway and finally spoke, his voice low and steady. “Seven minutes,” he said. “Unmoving.” Then he left the room.
By the fifth minute, the silence felt like pressure. Not external—internal. The kind that revealed whether a man’s discipline was genuine or merely performed. Sweat formed at the base of his neck. His breath wanted to break. But he did not move. He had learned that stillness was not the absence of struggle—it was the mastery of it.
When the seventh minute passed, the Bishop returned. He did not rush. He did not test the man with sudden movement or surprise. He simply stepped into the room, observed the posture, and nodded once. It was not praise. It was acknowledgment. The man had passed the stillness.
He lifted the towel from the table. “This ritual of five hundred years is to keep you aligned and purified. Sometimes it seems that we must beat the flesh to restore your spirit.”
They approached the Bishop and knelt before him, rising in unison with the solemn precision of men carrying out ancient duty.
Mar-Mar, the Bishop’s firstborn, still knelt on the floor, bound by the weight of his own deception. The Seven lifted him effortlessly. His feet never touched the ground. They carried him out of the hall, down the corridor, and back into the lowers—the very place he had risen from, the foundation of Taben Rael, the chamber where the fire of consequence burned without mercy. The doors closed behind them, sealing Mar-Mar’s fate with a final echo.
The heaviness lifted. The tension dissolved. The air grew lighter, as though a shadow had been removed. The covenant returned to its rightful place. The unknown spirit settled into the hall once more.
